About the Position:

The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) is one of eight colleges at CSUF and contains five departments. The college offers through its departments and programs, baccalaureate degrees in all disciplines and master's degrees in biological science, chemistry, geology, physics and mathematics. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our Physics team as the Instructional Support Technician III. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Provides technical support to instructors and students in lower and upper division Physics and Astronomy laboratory courses including labs in Mechanics, Electricity, Optics, Modern Physics, Astronomy, and Advanced Upper Division Labs. Purchases, set ups, calibrates, maintains and repairs Physics and Astronomy laboratory equipment. Plans, acquires, and distributes/deploys laboratory materials and equipment. Develops schedules for routine maintenance that minimizes downtime of equipment used in the Physics and Astronomy labs. Works with faculty and CSUF EHS to assist in the development of standard operating procedures and ensuring compliance with appropriate safety and security procedures. Collaborates with faculty in the development of new or updated instructional offerings dependent on materials, supplies, and equipment support; assists or solves problems related to laboratory materials substitutions, costs, or new equipment acquisition. Maintains laboratory-use and safety records, prepares reports, plans, and schedules for laboratory-related activities; coordinates a variety of technical support activities involving services provided by others such as technical equipment repair. Purchases, maintains, repairs computers and tablets for Physics and Astronomy laboratory as needed. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Four years of experience or the equivalent providing instructional support services, producing materials and supplies, or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the assigned area. Completion of two years of college from an accredited institution with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in a related discipline may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Completion of four years of college or the equivalent from an accredited institution with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in a related discipline may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Knowledge of the principles, methods, and information related to performing support services related to the discipline. Knowledge of the materials and supplies related to the curriculum, their characteristics, and uses. Ability to plan, organize, and schedule work. Ability to operate and repair technical and scientific equipment. Ability to coordinate support service to meet a comprehensive variety of needs. Ability to develop off-campus resources related to the discipline for obtaining materials or equipment.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree. Two or more years of experience in conducting or providing technical support for Physics and Astronomy experiments. Ability to set up, use, calibrate, troubleshoot and repair basic Physics and Astronomy lab equipment and supplies such as oscilloscopes, function generators, power supplies, Meters (Voltage, Amperage, and Wattage), and telescopes. Familiarity with the use of advanced Physics laboratory instruments such as but not limited to spectrum analyzers, data acquisition devices and/or computers. Familiarity with the commonly used Electrical Engineering lab materials and supplies such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, transistors, IC chips, and wire/cables. Competent in the troubleshooting and repair of analog and digital devices and equipment for Physics labs. Extremely familiar with the safety and security procedures for Physics labs.
