About the Opportunity:
The Academic Technologies (AT) team at Northeastern University (NU) seeks a motivated, self-starting individual to be a member of our dynamic team as an Academic Instructional Technologist. The successful candidate will be a key link between the AT team and the teaching and learning community at NU, including faculty and students across a broad range of departments, as well as outside users and partners, in order to help them understand and utilize AT resources for their teaching and research missions.

As an Academic Instructional Technologist at NU, your primary objective will be to support and enhance the teaching and learning enterprise through direct interaction with faculty and students. A key function will be to assist faculty in integrating STEM- and data-focused technologies into their in-person and online courses. Guidance on the appropriate use of educational technology tools to improve student outcomes will be provided to NU faculty across all colleges at the university. As a faculty facing member of the AT team, you will collaborate with other areas of the NU teaching and learning community (CATLR, the Provost's office, SAIL, EDGE, and the colleges) to provide a holistic approach to teaching and learning both in-person and online across the global NU community.

Responsibilities:
Faculty Engagement

  • Proactively reach out to faculty regarding new technologies and pedagogical techniques capable of improving learning outcomes or of resolving existing support requests

  • Support ServiceNow Tier-2 and 3 escalations

  • Provide in-person consultations on best practices in the utilization of educational technology tools to improve student outcomes

    Partnership/Collaboration

  • Collaborate with other areas of the NU teaching and learning community (CATLR, SAIL, EDGE, Provost's Office, the colleges) to provide a holistic approach to teaching and learning both in-person and online across the global NU community

  • In collaboration with end-users and systems-facing AT and ITS staff, gather requirements for, implement, and administer learning management environment solutions that are responsive to end-user needs

  • Collaborate with other departments within Information Technology Services, including Research Computing, to leverage infrastructure and expertise throughout the division

    Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in a STEM field
  • Demonstrated experience integrating current and emerging technologies in support of teaching and learning
  • Proficiency with common educational technology tools (Canvas, Zoom, Microsoft Office 365, Open on Demand, LTI standards, etc.)
  • Experience with STEM specific educational technology (Coding/programming tools for teaching, AWS Educate, Azure Dev Labs, GradeScope, analytics platforms, etc.)
  • Experience in higher ed, or other academic or research community environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to clearly identify the teaching and learning goals of faculty members and provide relevant, practical solutions using the available technology solutions
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues, perform root cause analysis, work with vendor contacts and support systems, and collaborate directly with the ITS Customer Experience organization to resolve faculty and student support requests
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies and remain current in developing trends in the teaching and learning community
  • Ability to independently create curriculum, training opportunities, and training materials in support of the adoption of educational technology
  • Ability to communicate and document clearly
  • Demonstrated strong writing skills
  • Desire for continuous self-improvement and maintenance of skills through training and demonstrated commitment to professional growth
    Curious by nature and unafraid of asking questions
  • Self-starter, with a proven track record for creativity and initiative

    Academic Technologies Solutions Development

  • Represent end-user needs in the administration of educational technology tools
  • Support the testing, planning, development, and implementation of academic technologies into the NU learning environment

  • Operate outside standard business hours when mission-critical systems are experiencing outages or degradation in service.

  • Attend educational technology centric conferences relevant to the mission of AT at NU. Contribute knowledge to the Academic Technologies team of technology, practices and trends from the field that influence teaching and learning with technology.

    Documentation/Training

  • Create and maintain Service-Now knowledgebase documentation according to ITS standards and oversee junior staff knowledgebase efforts.

  • Develop, present, and maintain training sessions and workshops, both online and in-person, relevant to AT services and resources

  • Interface with senior management to organize and contribute to internal documentation, external documentation strategy, and communication strategy.

    Team Operations

  • Mentor junior and student staff

  • Actively communicate progress and participate in reviews with technical staff and senior management

  • Demonstrate a commitment to Academic Technologies' values of Purpose, Growth, Presence, and Contribution

  • Other relevant duties as assigned


    Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years of experience supporting academic technologies, instructional design, and/or course development experience in a higher education environment. May be substituted with 4 years of teaching in data or STEM fields at the college level and demonstrated interest in pedagogy.
  • M.S. degree in educational technology, instructional design, or related STEM field
  • Experience with learning analytics and data driven improvement of student outcomes
  • Experience with accessibility standards and creating accessible teaching and learning materials
  • Knowledge of service management and ITIL processes
