The Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence (CATE) at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applicants for the position of Associate Instructional Designer to support the CATE's mission to engage all members of the UIC education community in transforming courses and programs into inclusive, accessible, engaging, and innovative learning environments.

Reporting to the CATE Senior Instructional Designer, the Associate Instructional Designer will plan and develop innovative courses and programs, advise instructors through on-campus and online consultations on course design and the delivery of instruction in various course modalities with the appropriate educational technologies, organize and deliver professional development programs such as on-campus workshops and online webinars, and create content for and deploy pedagogical resources such as teaching guides, newsletter articles, and on-demand videos. Key responsibilities of this position as follows.

Course Design:

  • Collaborate one-on-one with instructors and other subject matter experts to improve existing or to plan and create new high-quality, interactive, and accessible courses appropriate for on-campus, online, hybrid, and/or synchronous distributed instructional modalities; determine student learning objectives; and design compelling course content.

  • Utilize instructional design software and course delivery systems to develop the materials, including media and instructional methodologies for presenting course content

  • Support instructors in implementing educational technology that facilitates student engagement and learning.

  • Structure, organize, edit, repurpose, and/or redesign content in a pedagogically sound manner for the learning environment.

  • Develop assessment tools to measure course effectiveness, program quality, and to ensure student learning objectives are met.

  • Analyze confidential data on student outcomes, instruction, and curriculum content and delivery; summarize findings and recommend changes for improvements.


Consultation and Training:

  • Respond to instructors and departments requesting consultations and training on course design and delivery.

  • Advise instructors through one-on-one consultations on processes to identify student learning needs, in course design, in evaluating and selecting instructional methodologies and suitable educational technology to deliver course content, and in strategies to assess student outcomes.

  • Develop online quick guides, teaching guides, and toolkits on instructional techniques and evidence-based approaches to student learning.

  • Develop and deliver professional learning opportunities including workshops and webinars on designing and implementing courses in modalities such as hybrid, synchronous distributed, and online synchronous and asynchronous.

  • Proactively engage with Instructional Technologists to become familiar with the educational technology and tools within UIC's course management system (Blackboard) to offer expertise during consultations, training delivered to instructors, and course design services.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree with certification and/or other formal training (e.g., Master's degree) in instructional design, instructional technology, or related field.

  • Experience working with learning management systems, preferably Blackboard.

  • Experience in professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development and/or delivery.

  • Knowledge of and experience in current and emerging instructional pedagogies, adult learning theories, accessibility, usability, and human-centered design, learning outcome assessment and the application of instructional design models.

  • Strong communication skills.


Preferred Qualification

  • Commitment to service and team-oriented approach to the work environment.

  • Ability to manage and meet deadlines.

  • Working knowledge of designing for accessibility in compliance with ADA / WCAG requirements.

  • Familiarity with quality rubrics for course design.

  • Experience working with subject matter experts in the development of courses and programs

  • Experience teaching and/or training in face-to-face, online and/or hybrid learning environments.


This position is a full-time, 12-month appointment, with an anticipated start date of November 16, 2022. Salary range is from $65,000 to $75,000, commensurate with experience.
