The Instructional Assistant provides instructional assistance to students and instructors in the Music Department at San Diego Mesa College. Under the direction of an administrator or specified faculty member, the position is expected to operate independently with work direction and perform a wide variety of technical support duties that require training and/or experience in the field of music.

Major responsibilities include:
  • Schedule and control the use of music facilities, instruments, audio equipment, and practice rooms by checking items in and out, maintaining appropriate records and inventories, and ordering replacement items as necessary according to approved procedures.
  • Assist students and faculty in the proper selection and use of music software and audio-visual equipment.
  • Perform clerical duties in the music office such as answering telephones, taking minutes, providing information on classes, opening and routing mail, maintaining records and files, and preparing all purchase requisitions for music materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Process incoming supplies, materials, and equipment by identifying and labeling items and maintaining appropriate records.
  • Operate a variety of equipment related to the Music Department, including computer hardware and software applications.
  • Provide information to students, instructors, and others as requested; ensure that appropriate safety procedures are observed by students.
  • Make occasional minor repairs, coordinate major repairs, and perform/coordinate preventative maintenance on equipment in the Music Department.
  • Provide training and work direction to student aides and hourly assistants; give department orientation to student aides, faculty, and staff.
  • Maintain instructional area in a clean and orderly manner; ensure the security of the facilities as assigned.
  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of the music computers in Maas Lab and Recording Studio when the immediate supervisor is not present.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated experience with current music and multimedia technology software and hardware including audio, video and social media (music notation software, music recording software, inventorying and testing various computer programs) is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in performing minor maintenance and repair of musical instruments and equipment is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with computers (Mac and PC), programs, word processing, data organization, and basic graphic design.
  • Demonstrated experience in office and organizational skills, word processing skills, planning and scheduling work, maintaining records and preparing reports, working independently.
  • Effective skills with people and communication (oral and written), ability to interface successfully with students, faculty and staff on phone, in person and email.
  • Experience with security procedures and expectations (keys, alarm codes, classroom equipment) is preferred.
  • Ability to train and provide work direction to others.
