Position Description

Under general direction, provides instructional design consultation and expertise to faculty and staff in order to improve the student experience in and out of the classroom; explores and initiates innovations in technology for online, hybrid, web-enhanced, and related course content and design and student learning; develops and offers workshops and training in instructional and student support technologies; designs, maintains, and updates online presence, tutorials, and other digital and print media related to online learning and support for the student experience; participates in operational planning, data analysis, and report writing to support program goals and improvement; identifies and maintains instructional integrity of online and related course development in accordance with College and external standards and practices; and provides first- level support as needed to ensure timely response to users.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional design consultation and expertise to faculty and staff in support of the learning and support experience.
  • Assist faculty in producing, developing, and implementing innovative and effective online course materials and experiences including multi-media elements, assessments, digital learning, and other media as technologies evolve.
  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure instructional integrity of distance learning course development utilizing systematic design with clear standards and objectives in service of learning and support experiences.
  • Plan, design, and implement a variety of faculty professional development opportunities on the effective and innovative use of instructional technologies as well as student-centered resources that support online equity, access, success, and retention.
  • Administer and maintain learning management system and related tools including research, testing, integration, and troubleshooting.
  • Design, maintain, and update web-based learning guides, tutorial, and other digital and printed materials that effectively promote online learning.
  • Identify and maintain effective tools and techniques necessary to expand student access and success in the online environment.
  • Coordinate efforts that enhance student preparation for online learning and support.
  • Coordinate and consult with campus Accessibility Specialist and other appropriate resources to assist staff and faculty to ensure Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 compliance in software and course materials; ensure universal design for learning principles are integrated into course design and materials; review course materials for accessibility compliance and provide accessibility support and resources.
  • Provide support in development programs for faculty, students, and staff.
  • Serve as point of contact with relevant external vendors and outside agencies as needed; serve as a technical liaison with college information technology and services departments.
  • Participate in advisory committees and workgroups related to assignment.
  • Participate in operational planning for the online learning program to meet college-wide, program-level, and accreditation goals.
  • Assist in monitoring support requests via electronic means including, but not limited to, email, phone, support tickets system; attempt resolution or route to appropriate support; and assist in optimizing in support solutions.
  • Perform related duties as required.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Clear evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Education equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in education technology, instructional design, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible and reasonably recent experience that includes the development of online instructional content using best practices in universal design and in administering a learning management system and related tools. Advanced education in a related field may substitute for up to one (1) year of experience.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Instructional technology including multi-media, web, and accessibility and universal design principles, theories, and methodology.
    • Online learning practices and technologies.
    • Graphic and software interface design, particularly for web-based applications.
    • Higher education learning management software and related applications.
    • Principles, methods, and techniques of designing and presenting training materials and programs.
    • Principles and practices used in troubleshooting software application problems.
    • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
    • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, data management, and project management tools.
    • Principles, practices, and procedures of information analysis and report preparation.
    • Principles and practices used to establish and maintain files and information retrieval systems.
  • Ability to:
    • Understand, interpret, and apply administrative policies and procedures as well as pertinent laws, regulations, and ordinances including federal, state, and accreditation regulations and guidelines related to online education.
    • Apply current instructional technologies to support student learning outcomes.
    • Utilize generally accepted instructional technology principles and practices as employed in higher education.
    • Utilize a wide range of digital media and web development tools to accomplish assigned tasks.
    • Develop online instructional content using best practices in universal design.
    • Develop and facilitate workshops and tutorials in a variety of engaging and innovative formats.
    • Develop 508 compliant course content and design and test accessibility using various assistive technology guidelines and tools.
    • Produce innovative and engaging multimedia content using current media production tools.
    • Operate, maintain, and administer current course management systems and instructional technology tools.
    • Provide applicable and effective training to faculty and staff regarding instructional technology and coordinate the development and provision of training on software applications and rich media.
    • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
    • Operate a variety of equipment including computers, scanners, cameras, printers, video, CD-ROM and DVD, supporting software applications including word processing, data management, and project management tools.
    • Assess user needs and provide effective communication and appropriate technical support for instructional applications to both beginning and experienced technology users
    • Demonstrate organizational ability necessary to initiate and manage multiple collaborative instructional technology projects and see them through to timely completion.
    • Adapt to changing technologies and learn functionality of new software, equipment, programs, and systems and related tools as they evolve; independently maintain currency in educational technology, computer programs/software, web design, graphic design, and related tools.
    • Collaborate with faculty, administration, and classified staff.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing to a variety of audiences.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENTThis is a full-time, 12-month, classified bargaining unit position. Starting date: as soon as possible. Range 33 of the CSEA Salary Schedule, with a starting salary of Step A, $5,980. Excellent benefits package.
